Here's my Sweeney Todd story: Sweeney Todd has been one of my very favorite musicals since I was a kid. I think I played my cassettee tapes of the production with Angela Landsbury until they broke.

So, I was so so excited about seeing the recent production with Patti LuPone. I mean, Patti LuPone playing tuba, what could be better? Carol and I immediately purchased some excellent seats.

Of course, the one night we chose ended up being the night of a terrible snow storm. We pulled on our boots and coats and trudged into Manhattan anyway, intent on seeing a piece of theatre history. We slogged through the streets, endured dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (the only place we could get in and still make it to the show on time) and waded up the theatre, only to see the theatre doors plastered with signs with those omnious words: "Tonight, the role of Misses Lovett, normally played by Patti LuPone, will be played by..."

ARRGH!!! We made it through the snow and YOU DIDN'T, PATTI! We were dismayed, though I suppose not as dismayed as the gentleman at the box office window I heard yelling, "I've waited 25 years for this!!!!"

The show was still wonderful, even sans Patti and her tuba.

Somewhat ironic PS: My parents saw the show several weeks later. Of course Patti was there THAT night and was, in my mother's words, "fabulous." Sigh.

Another theater comment based on your list: I saw the production of Cabaret at Studio 54 and it was incredible. One of the best, and most frightening, shows I've ever seen. I recently read that the proverbial "they" are thinking of reviving it again. See it!
