More Separated at Birth

I was at the Hamptons Film Festival this past weekend and caught a documentary about Charlotte Rampling entitled The Look, and could not get over how much she resembled Lauren Bacall. According to someone else who was there, way back at the beginning of her career she was nicknamed "Baby Bacall." I was also struck by her complete lack of vanity - this is someone who has been known throughout her career for playing the gorgeous femme fatale, and it was quite clear that she has not had plastic surgery. The doc included film clips from some of her more notorious roles, like the holocaust survivor who has an affair with her Nazi torturer in The Night Porter. She talks about the role and how Pauline Kael castigated her not merely as an actress, but also as a human being for even accepting the part. But one gathers she would rather play parts like this than play Mary Poppins.
