Thoughts While Watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

• On first seeing Chevy Chase in the audience: "what is Dick Cheney doing here?"
• Was Meg Ryan supposed to be Tom Hanks' date? Gee, I guess real life is just like the movies!
• Justin Timberlake: "Bringing Sexy Back?" Really?? More like "Bringing my paper back from the end of the driveway."
• Best line of the night: "I have seen the future of rock and roll and it's not Leonard Cohen" (said by Leonard Cohen, quoting music critic/rock producer Jon Landau).
• Madonna: Although she still appears to be unfamiliar with the concept of sincerity (at least in front of an audience), she did seem to be more forthcoming than usual, offering up her take on confronting a sea of girls all dressed exactly like her, when she first played Madison Square Garden ("freaked me out"). She also finally lost the Brit accent, thank gawd!
• Best performance: Joan Jett on the Dave Clark Five's Bits and Pieces.
  

"How fierce is it?"

Pretty fierce. Congratulations to Christian Siriano, the fiercest competitor EVAH, on winning Project Runway, Season 4. I have no doubt that it's only a matter of time before you rule the entire planet. Just don't let it go to your head (Oops! Too late!). Congrats also to the runners-up, Rami "I have a passion" Kashou, and Jillian "What just happened?" Lewis, who developed stunning dress collections for New York's Fashion Week at Bryant Park. Bravo!

What I learned from watching the Grammys

• That Herbie Hancock loves Joni Mitchell almost as much as I do.


• That Amy Winehouse's prodigious talent does not extend to dancing.


• That Tina Turner should maybe start to rethink the wardrobe (sorry, Tina!)


• Natalie Cole? Tall. Tony Bennett? Not so much.


• My new favorite couple: Kid Rock and Keely Smith (you go, girl!)


• That I don't mind so much dinosaur acts resurrecting their old hits, if the dinosaurs in question are Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.


• Rihanna? Grammys cutest!


• Beyonce? Irreplaceable.

Super Bowl XLII Highlights

I absolutely loved the commercial about the guy who was bagging groceries and playing the oboe ("it's a member of the woodwind family") and got drafted for the NFL. Also, the national anthem, as rendered by Jordin Sparks was (dare I say it?) sparkling. As was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. And I guess you could say the Giants winning was also a highlight.

Highlights of the SAG Awards

As you know, I'm all about Oscar, but in lieu of the fact that there may not be an awards show to view this year, I got all the fun I could out of viewing the Screen Actors Guild Awards. My favorite moments:
Javier Bardem thanking the Coen brothers for discarding all the takes where he "really sucked"
No Country for Old Men winning Best Ensemble and Josh Brolin saying that they (the Coen brothers) made a freaky little movie, "whether or not you liked the ending"
Julie Christie emphasizing the importance of unions, and saying that if she forgot to thank anybody it was only because she was still in character (she played an alzheimer's victim in Away from Her)
Daniel Day-Lewis paying tribute to Heath Ledger, acknowledging the ending of Brokeback Mountain as one of the most emotional moments he's witnessed on film
Charles Durning was a decorated war hero - who knew?
Tina Fey referring to her costar Alec Baldwin as Fred Astaire, and herself as the hat rack he dances with
Seeing Jon Hamm in the audience (how cute is he??!)
Jane Krakowski at the top of the show when they were doing their reminiscences "....and I'm an actor," saying how acting affords us the opportunity to completely transform ourselves, then saying, "I'm Johnny Depp, and I'm an actor!"
My least favorite moment:
Mickey Rooney pretty much demanding a standing ovation (come to think of it, Ruby Dee did pretty much the same thing, but in a much subtler, classier way)
See you at the Oscars (I hope)!

Another show I'm sorta into...

Am currently wending my way through Season one of the DVDs of Nip/Tuck (or, as I prefer to call it, Snip/Stuck), looking forward to getting to all the cool guest stars in Season three (or is it four)? Would love to have sat in on the pitch meeting for this show: "ER meets Two and a Half Men" or perhaps "Six Feet Under meets The Odd Couple?"
